Lunch was called for one o'clock. At six the plates had not been cleared and Léon's father was still standing, still speaking, on his fourth attempt at the same sentence about his late wife.

Nobody moved him along. That is the wedding — not the ceremony, which took nine minutes, but the five hours afterwards where a table of forty refused to end the afternoon.
